A stunning hat-trick by Benito Lowe inspired The Millers to a fifth successive league victory, overcoming a resolute Stockport Town in front of a healthy Bank Holiday crowd at Church Lane. After scoring twice in Saturday's victory over St Martins, Lowe went one better against the Stockport side, scoring twice from outside the area before completing his treble with a wonderful solo run.
The Millers joint-Managers made changes to Saturday's side, Mason Fallon came in at left back for his first start of the season, taking the captains armband in the process, while Chris Rogers was restored to the right back slot, Elliot Cooke dropping to the bench. Kyle Oakes was rested, taking a place among the substitutes with Jack Wray moved into midfield, while Jake Pollard was rested from the matchday squad as he continues his comeback from injury. With Rick Tindall injured at weekend The Millers welcomed Joe Bevan back into the starting line up in attack.
The Millers tore out of the starting blocks, Darren McKnight going close with a free-kick on four minutes, before Josh Schofield saved well from a Teddy Osipitan back heel a minute later. It seemed just a matter of time until the deadlock was broken and so it proved, Osipitan laid a square pass in front of an on rushing Lowe 25 yards out, and the midfielder smashed the ball into the corner of the net.
The lead was doubled on 22 minutes as The Millers perfectly executed a training ground routine from a corner kick, McKnight's corner converted by Bevan for his 8th goal of the season, the home side now well in control of the game. They were rocked just after the half hour mark though as a scuffle in the penalty area saw Akim Samms shown a straight red card as he retaliated to some close attention from a Town defender. Before the visitors had time to take advantage of the numerical advantage they found themselves three goals down. Osipitan picked out Lowe, who curled a wonderful effort into the top corner from 25 yards out.
A flurry of cards just before the interval saw Wray and Lowe booked, before the visitors gave themselves from hope right on the half time whistle. A cross from the left volleyed in from 12 yards by Max Greenhalgh. A disappointing end to the half for The Millers who had been in complete control until that point.
The Millers supporters expected the visitors to start the second half quickly and so it proved, the goal just before the interval offering them a way back into the game. Dylan Forth was called into action on several occasions to keep his sides two goal advantage, but he could do nothing about Max Dickov's curling effort from the edge of the area on 64 minutes as the visitors reduced The Millers lead to a solitary goal.
Just three minutes later though and Lowe made the game safe, picking the ball up thirty yards from goal the midfielder dribbled round several defenders before sliding the ball past Schofield to complete one of the finest hat-tricks scored at Church Lane in many years. Two minutes later the visitors were reduced to ten men, Kieran Nolan sent off, and a member of The Millers coaching staff was sent from the dug out as the fiery contest reached its conclusion. The visitors went close late on but once the numbers evened up The Millers were rarely troubled as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season and position at the top of the league table.
