The Millers were brought firmly back to earth by a clinical Sandbach United side at Church Lane on Monday evening, after a tired second half performance saw them surrender the lead and ultimately find themselves crushed by five goals to one.
After back to back victories over play off chasing sides in the previous five days, Prestwich Heys and Whitchurch Alport the victims, the Millers approached the game in confident spirits, although there were some aching limbs in a starting line up that found itself shorn of Joe Armstrong, Michael Jones and Jack McConnell due to other commitments.
Nevertheless the Millers started brightly and deservedly took the lead on 12 minutes, a long ball from the back was headed goalwards by Dennis Sherriff before being turned in from close range by Jake Pollard. The home side were to have further opportunities to add to their score before the turning point of the game in the 43rd minute, when Sherriff limped off to be replaced by Martin Gordon. The change in personnel saw the Millers change the focus of their attacks, added to fatigue playing its part, and the visitors firmly seized control of the contest.
Within five minutes of the restart Sandbach had turned the game on its head, Chris Smith and an own goal giving them the lead. As the Millers pressed forward in the closing stages they were picked off at will, as James Kirby (2) and Jordan Davies added to the Sandbach tally.
