A tired looking Millers side ground out a hard earned victory against a resolute Stockport Georgians side, on a very cold March evening at Cromley Road, as Kyle Hawley made a surprise return from injury having been out of action since December. 'The Hitman' was injured in the victory over Abbey Hey at Church Lane just after Christmas with the expectation that his meniscus injury would keep him sidelined until the summer, however having trained over the weekend he declared himself fit to play and he was restored to the line up. Recent signing Ollie Parker made his debut at right back, the defender having also represented Ashton United and Furness Vale this season, and he impressed in his first start at this level.
The home side enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and were unfortunate not to go ahead on 15 minutes when Kyle Wych thumped a close range volley against Dylan Forth's right hand post, and they were punished for the miss almost immediately when The Millers took the lead. Teddy Osipitan picked the ball up on the right flank, cut inside Sam Oliver and stroked a left footed finish across Oliver Cuthbertson and into the far corner of the net. As the evening grew cooler the playing service began to freeze and the prospect of good football was removed as both sides battled the conditions as well as their opponents, and the first half ended with no addition to the score.
The Millers were the better side after the break and could have doubled their lead on 65 minutes, Kyle Oakes seeing his deflected shot hitting the cross bar, and then with fifteen minutes to go Ospitan raced into the area and appeared to be brought down by Will Wareing. No penalty was given, the referee perhaps not ideally placed to make a decision and the linesman was not given the option to intervene. It was not to prove crucial though as seven minutes later The Millers did score their second, George Howarth's corner flicked on by Manu Omorogbe and Marcus Dibble arrived like a train to power a header into the net. With the game now out of reach Georgians visibly tired and in the closing stages Wareing was sent off for striking Osipitan in the face, a follow up incident spotted by both referee and linesman and one related to the earlier penalty appeal. The game ended without further additions to the score, a good three points on the road for Dave Birch and Mike Norton's side.
