The Millers battle to earn three points on the road

New Mills came from behind to secure a vital 3-1 victory away at Cammell Laird, overturning an early deficit with a resilient second-half performance that showcased their character and clinical finishing.
The Millers endured a nightmare start, conceding inside the opening minute. A well-worked corner routine allowed the hosts to steal a march, with Callum France rising unmarked for a free header that looped beyond the despairing dive of Jakovlevs and into the net. It was a gut punch for The Millers, who had arrived with momentum but suddenly found themselves chasing the game on a tricky pitch.
Despite the early setback, the Millers refused to panic. The first half was a scrappy affair, with both sides battling for control in midfield. Chris Baguley’s side grew into the contest, probing with patient build-up play and forcing a series of set-pieces, but clear-cut chances were at a premium. Cammell Laird sat deep, content to protect their lead, while The Millers pushed forward without overcommitting. At the break, it remained 1-0, and the stadium buzzed with belief that one goal could swing the game.
The equaliser arrived in the 56th minute. Josh Lowe was the hero, latching onto Bobby Carter’s overhead kick and poking home from close range. Parity restored, and the momentum firmly with The Millers.
Buoyed by the goal, the Millers pressed on relentlessly. The pressure told in the 77th minute when Bobby Carter scrambled home. It was a chaotic goalmouth melee following a corner – the ball pinballed around the six-yard box amid a sea of bodies, and Carter showed predator’s instincts to bundle it over the line from close range. 2-1, and the comeback was on.
Cammell Laird threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, but they left gaps at the back. In stoppage time, Harry Dean sealed the three points in style. Breaking clear on a swift counter-attack, Dean raced through on goal, kept his composure under pressure, and slotted a cool finish past the advancing keeper. 3-1 – game over, and a statement win for The Millers, in spite of not being at their best.
