The Millers Club Historian Allan Jones has spent weeks in discussion with the clubs media team and they have finally managed to produce the 12 man shortlist for the central midfield positions in the Ultimate Millers Team.
The polls will begin on Twitter and votes can be accepted in the club also, as we look for two candidates to join Liam Higginbotham, Mike Barton, Adam Mather, Mike Ryan, Peter Band, Luke Horrocks and Steve 'Wogga' Worrall in the line up.
BILL LOMAS
Played alongside his brother Frank in pre WW1 days. Tough tackling and responsible for the success the team enjoyed during that period. Won bags of medals both for the Millers and playing 5 a side.
FRANK EATON
Frank could double up as either a midfielder or a centre forward and when he did he bagged plenty of goals during the early 1920’s. No wonder second division Barnsley snapped him up where he played for a number of seasons before joining QPR.
MAURICE BROOKE
A player like Eaton who could also double up as a striker. He scored plenty of goals and is one of only six players to score 6 goals in a game. He set up plenty of goals for his partner Derek Oldham.
PETER McCOMBE
Peter was an early Joe Martin signing and played for the club for the next 14 seasons. Probably holds the appearance record if we had a full accurate account. Won absolutely bags of medals playing during the 1960’s and 70’s.
GRAHAM HOLDER
Son of Bert who captained the club during the 1950’s. Graham played during the mid 1970’s and won the Player of the Year Award before being snapped up by Hyde United where he picked up their similar award also. Skilful on the ball and a big favourite with the fans.
TREVOR JONES
Made his debut for Joe Martin's side aged just 15 before moving onto have a distinguished career at Buxton. Later returned to Church Lane and became hugely popular with supporters, his terrific shots from distance are fondly remembered by the Church Lane faithful
LEE ARNFIELD
Diminutive for a central midfield player but a good header of the ball and very strong in possession. Noted for his searing pace, Lee played in the successful Millers side of the mid-1980's under the management of (now Chairman) Ras Coverley
STEVEN 'PADDY' LITTLER
The heartbeat of the side that won back to back Derbyshire Cup's in the early 2000's under Alan Peatfield. A box to box midfielder, Littler spent several years as a player at Church Lane before taking the Managerial reigns of the Reserves when the club entered the NWCFL
CARLOS MEAKIN
'The King' was brought to the club by Tony Hancock after a lengthy pursuit of his signature, and what a signing he turned out to be! Meakin was to become only the fourth player to net 200 goals for the club, boasting an astonishing goal scoring record from midfield. His final Church Lane career stats were 295 appearances and 201 goals.
MARK INNES
A Tony Hancock signing, Inneshad spent many years playing in the football league before moving to Church Lane. Inner spent several seasons at the club, including the FA Vase run of 2009/10, the NWCFL Championship campaign a year later and the Evo-Stik play-off season of 2012/13
CHRIS YOUNG
Combative midfield player Young, was signed by Ally Pickering to boost the squad following promotion to the Evo-Stik League. A good all round player who refused to accept defeat, Young was a strong character in the dressing room and was highly regarded by his team mates
RYAN HOPPER
Signed by Roy Soule in 2014, Hopper spent several years at Church Lane becoming a fans favourite. He still attends games as a supporter when his playing commitments allow. Whilst never appearing in a side that would be regarded as 'great', Hopper showed incredible commitment to the club and is one of the most popular players of the modern era
